Utrecht University is pleased to invite applications for a new Chair in Economic Geography, which will be appointed in the Department of Human Geography and Planning at its Faculty of Geosciences.

The Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University is the largest in the Netherlands, offering a comprehensive range of geoscience courses in both the sciences and social sciences. The Department of Human Geography and Planning is one of four Departments at the Faculty of Geosciences and has its focus on the enhancement of long-term economic developments of cities, inclusion and social inequalities in relation to transnational mobilities and the use of public space, and health outcomes of urban living. The Department has recently developed a new research programme that investigates urban issues in the context of an ongoing worldwide trend of increasing urbanisation. The Urban Futures Research Programme is divided into two main research sub programmes; Social Urban Transitions and Economic Urban Transitions. The appointment of the Chair in Economic Geography frames within this new Research Programme.

The Chair in Economic Geography aims to develop innovative, new research lines for the Department with respect to the locational behaviour of firms and people, as well as the meso- and macro-economic contexts that determine regional structural changes and transitions. Research will take place in, and in collaboration with various domains, such as urban and regional economics, innovation studies, entrepreneurship, growth and development analyses, and network theory and analysis. In line with the Department’s Urban Futures Research Programme, a dynamic, actor, regional and policy-based approach of economic geography is envisaged in addition to an institutional and network approach. As evolutionary economic geography is already strong in the Department, the Chair can decide to further build on that expertise.

Standard professorial duties include research, teaching and supervision, and management. The salary will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities.

Utrecht University strives for diversity in the staff. Therefore, we explicitly invite female and foreign candidates to apply.
