We are building the ‘university of the future’. We are doing this through empowering and creating opportunity for all our students and staff so as they may learn, discover and enrich society locally, nationally and internationally. Our success is demonstrated by many accolades, including a TEF Gold Award, the Times Higher Education University of the Year for 2017, The Times and The Sunday Times Modern University of the Year in 2018, a top-20 position in the 2019 Guardian University League Table, and a top-5 position in England for overall satisfaction in the latest National Student Survey.
The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment has a heritage stretching back 175 years and today offers high quality academic courses, underpinned by internationally leading research, that result in exceptional levels of graduate employability. The School is arranged into five departments that cover architecture, civil engineering, construction management, product design and property management. There are approximately 3300 students, which includes 300 taught postgraduates and 70 doctoral students.
We are now seeking to appoint a Deputy Dean to lead and develop the student academic experience for the School. S/he will be an experienced leader with a passion for innovative pedagogy and student experience. As this is a student-facing role, the successful appointee will need to have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to engage across the broad portfolio of the School in collaboration with the Heads of Department. With a good knowledge of the disciplines in the School, and of higher education pedagogies, s/he will be qualified to doctoral level or have a relevant professional qualification. With demonstrable experience of working in a senior role and leading change in teaching and learning, the Deputy Dean will safeguard and develop the student experience, provide leadership and mentorship to other staff members in the School, and continue to build the strong profile of the School both nationally and internationally. As a member of the School senior management group, s/he will also contribute more widely to the leadership of the School and University.
The Deputy Dean role is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the leadership of the School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment as it delivers on its bold vision for the future.
