A unique partnership between two outstanding universities, Harper Adams University and Keele University, the Harper & Keele Veterinary School brings together two unique institutions with a track record of excellence in teaching and student experience, to provide an exciting new opportunity for veterinary students to train within rural Staffordshire and Shropshire. The School now seeks to appoint its inaugural Head of School.

The new Veterinary School is uniquely structured and will help students graduate with the required skills to be immediately effective first opinion practitioners in the rapidly changing modern veterinary and animal welfare industries. Students, the first intake of which will be in September 2020, will study a five-year programme leading to a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery degree.

The School will benefit from Harper’s long-standing reputation in animal sciences and access to Harper’s farm and companion animal facilities, alongside Keele’s experience of establishing a leading UK medical school and significant recent investment in facilities such as state-of-the-art teaching laboratories.

The appointed candidate will be a qualified vet and an accomplished individual in the field of veterinary sciences. They will be able to demonstrate a dynamic leadership style, and will possess the ambition and vision required to establish a new veterinary school. The individual will also be able to work with multiple stakeholders and be able to act as an external ambassador for the School. The appointee will share a deep commitment to widening participation and increasing access veterinary education, something that is at the heart of the School’s purpose and values.

Set on a 635 hectare farm in stunning Shropshire, Harper Adams is the UK’s leading specialist university tackling the future development of the world’s food production, animal sciences, engineering, land management and sustainable business.

Harper Adams has been delivering animal health higher education for nearly 30 years, with Veterinary Nursing, Bioveterinary Science and Animal Behaviour and Welfare programmes proving both popular and successful. More recent additions include postgraduate and undergraduate degrees in Veterinary Physiotherapy and, new from 2018, a suite of Applied Zoology programmes.

Keele University was founded nearly 70 years ago on the belief that it meets the demands of a new kind of society, economy and world, and their principles resonate now more than ever. Located in the heart of England, Keele is the largest single campus university in the country. With the benefits of a rural green campus but with Stoke-on-Trent and its associated towns on the door step, this is a lovely environment in which to live and study. The campus is also home to a Medical School which has extensive facilities on campus as well as partnerships with local NHS Trusts.

Applications will be accepted from January 2019.
