The Royal Collection Trust is seeking an exceptional leader to be The Librarian and Assistant Keeper of the Royal Archives. This is an extraordinary and unique opportunity to work within the setting of the Royal Household of the British Monarchy.
The Royal Library is one of the curatorial sections of Royal Collection with responsibility for the conservation, presentation and interpretation of approximately 205,000 books and manuscripts. About a quarter of these are housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, with the remainder disbursed over the Occupied Royal Palaces as well as Clarence House, Sandringham House and Balmoral Castle. The Royal Library is also responsible for approximately 5000 coins and medals, in addition to bank-notes, seals, insignia and other material.
Within the wider strategic ambitions of the Royal Collection Trust and the business plan of the Private Secretary's Office, the Librarian will have full curatorial and conservational responsibility for the Royal Library, Bindery and the Royal Archives, ensuring a consistent approach to the stewardship of the documentary and intellectual heritage of the Monarchy whilst also developing and diversifying public access and enjoyment through traditional and emerging channels. They will develop and maintain professional relationships with a wide range of stakeholders across the Royal Household, and with national and international libraries, cultural institutions, researchers, suppliers, and public audiences.
Reporting to the Director of the Royal Collection and working closely with the Keeper of the Royal Archives (The Private Secretary to The Queen), candidates will bring a successful track record as a senior leader, and the sensitivity and ability to represent Royal Collection Trust and the Royal Household with credibility and authority both internally and externally. They will have a strong scholarly background with in-depth knowledge of history (particularly British) and bibliography, a good understanding of digitisation within relevant environments, and experience of developing, implementing and driving a strategy for greater public access to and interpretation of collections.
Held by The Queen in trust for her successors and the nation, the Royal Collection is the department of the Royal Household charged with the care and preservation of the Royal Collection and its presentation to the public. It incorporates a charity, the Royal Collection Trust, and its subsidiary trading company, Royal Collection Enterprises Limited.
The closing date for applications is 09.00 GMT on Monday 25th February 2019.
