Sheffield offers an exciting opportunity to lead a world-renowned department of Materials Science and Engineering, building on their existing excellent record to achieve even greater success.
The Department is one of the national leaders in the field. Comprising 160 staff across over 24 different nationalities, they have an enviable long-standing, international reputation for research (rated top 5 in REF 2014) and high-quality teaching. Their research attracts outstandingly high grant income, as well as valued collaborations with industry including Rolls-Royce, GKN, Johnson Matthey, and NDA. Their innovative teaching bridges the gap between academia and industry, and their undergraduates become leaders in the field of Materials. The next period will see opportunity to shape Department's activities following the opening of their Henry Royce Institute-funded Research Development Centre.
An experienced and highly effective academic and manager, the appointee will hold the role of Head of Department for their first four years. The appointee will provide strong, strategic leadership to ensure the University maintains and develops their reputation for excellence within the increasingly challenging environment of Higher Education.
To excel in this role, the appointee will have a clear vision of what academic excellence looks like and be able to translate that vision into action, leading their colleagues with insight and enthusiasm. The appointee will ensure that the University’s research remains at the forefront of the discipline, helping to change the world by addressing some of society’s biggest research challenges and educating the world-class engineers of tomorrow.
Alongside the role of Head of Department, the appointee will continue to develop their own academic career, contributing strongly in teaching, research and scholarship that is recognised internationally for its originality, significance and rigour.

The ideal candidate is an internationally renowned Chair with experience of delivering high-quality research in Materials Science. The appointee will be able to demonstrate their ability to provide strong inspirational leadership, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and experience of developing and delivering high-quality teaching at a variety of levels.
A PhD in a relevant discipline is essential.
