The British Academy is the UK’s national academy for the humanities and social sciences.   We exist to inspire and support high achievement in these subjects throughout the UK and internationally, and to promote their public value and how they can help to shape the great themes of our age.  Established by Royal Charter in 1902 and with charitable status, the British Academy is an independent, self-governing fellowship of over 1,000 Fellows, with a further 300 overseas, and managed by our Chief Executive, Alun Evans. We have grown significantly in recent years, expanding our role, remit, policy and funding functions. We are about to undergo a major capital development at our Grade 1-listed home on Carlton House Terrace, which will enable us significantly to increase our public engagement activities and commercial opportunities.

Within this exciting context, we are seeking a new Director of Finance and Corporate Services, a role that is central to the overall strategic purpose of the Academy. Reporting to the Chief Executive as part of the Senior Management Team, the Director will be responsible for all aspects of financial management in the Academy, alongside IT, accommodation and estates, front of house and hospitality, and the Academy’s separate commercial trading company, Clio.  They will provide visible and collective leadership for, and be an inspiring representative of, the organisation, balancing the strategic interests and broad expertise of the Academy with the development of a range of initiatives to harness the Academy’s intellectual resources for public benefit, in the UK and overseas.

Candidates for the role will be able to demonstrate a breadth and depth of experience and successful delivery in a similar role, within an equally complex and demanding organisation.  Fully financially-qualified, they will be able to balance commercial viability with the Academy’s wider public purpose and demonstrate a passion for our organisation’s mission.
