We are the independent body in the UK representing the diversity of medical science. Our mission is to advance biomedical and health research and its translation into benefits for society.

Established in 1998 as an expert body to deal with issues at the interface of medical science and healthcare, the Academy is part of the national academies group, alongside the Royal Society, British Academy, and the Royal Academy of Engineering. We are governed by a Council of 21 Fellows, including 6 Honorary Officers who provide strategic advice and oversight. Professor Sir Robert Lechler FMedSci is the current President.

We are working to secure a future in which:

  • UK and global health is improved by the best research.
  • The UK leads the world in biomedical and health research and is renowned for the quality of its research outputs, talent and collaborations.
  • Independent, high quality medical science advice informs the decisions that affect society.
  • More people have a say in the future of health and research.

The Academy is administered by a small professional team of 49 staff working across the range of Academy activities including the Fellowship, Medical Science Policy, Grants, Biomedical Careers, Mentoring, financial and facilities management and the Academy's governance and external relations. Our current Executive Director, Dr Helen Munn will be moving on from her role following ten years of highly successful leadership, growing our income and profile, and diversifying the Academy’s activities. She leaves us in a strong and sustainable position, providing a fantastic opportunity for our next outstanding and inspirational leader.

Responsible to the Trustee Board (Council) for the delivery of the Academy’s strategy, the next Executive Director will lead the Academy’s efforts in promoting excellence, developing talented researchers, influencing research and policy, and engaging patients, the public and professionals. S/he will also provide support to the Academy’s 1200 Fellows, all of whom have been elected on the basis of outstanding contributions to a range of scientific fields, and are drawn from universities, hospitals, general practice, industry and the public service. Our Fellows are central to all we do. It is their talent and expertise that ensures we can bring authoritative opinion and practical guidance to complex issues in medical science and healthcare.

We are seeking an experienced and strategic leader with significant financial and fundraising acumen, as well as political intelligence, for this role. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to swiftly build credibility and engagement amongst staff, Fellows and a broad range of stakeholders - across academia, government and industry, and will have sound judgement as well as influencing and policy skills. Our next Executive Director will be an excellent communicator and networker, with an agile approach to managing changing priorities diplomatically and competently. Most importantly, s/he will uphold our existing values of working practices, will be passionately aligned with our mission, and will demonstrate an evidenced commitment to equality and diversity.

The deadline for applications 9am GMT on Thursday, 14th March 2019.

The role will be based at our offices in 41 Portland Place, London, UK.
