The School of English

The School of English is part of the Faculty of Arts. The School comprises 18 academics from around the world with expertise in English literary studies and linguistics. Faculty members at the School engage in research and provide instruction at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in literary and cultural studies, English linguistics and Language and Communication. Major and minor programmes in English Studies and Language and Communication are offered at the undergraduate level. In addition, the School provides supervision for research postgraduate degrees (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) and offers two taught postgraduate programmes: a Master of Arts in English Studies and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in English. The Role

The Faculty of Arts seeks to appoint a senior scholar in the broadly defined field of Language and Communication with expertise in one or more of the following areas: Linguistic Anthropology; Language and Colonialism; Critical Discourse Studies; Social Semiotics; Visual Communication; Multimodality; or another relevant area. The appointee will make a particularly significant contribution to the teaching of the Language and Communication programme, as well as the MA in English Studies. Accountable to the Head of the School of English, the ideal candidate will be an internationally recognised academic with a passion for both research and teaching. As one of the most senior academics in the School, the appointee will inevitably play a leadership role in research, helping to define a dynamic research agenda responsive to the sociopolitical and academic context.

Terms of Appointment

Appointment will be on a tenured basis. A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee's qualifications and experience will be offered.  At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary, as well as annual leave, and medical benefits.  Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
