Bristol Zoological Society is a conservation and education charity, which runs and operates Bristol Zoo Gardens and Wild Place Project, welcoming nearly 700,000 visitors per year.

The Society is run by around 250 staff together with approximately 350 volunteers and exists to create a sustainable future for wildlife and people. Our commitment to wildlife is centuries old and born out of a desire both to better understand life on our planet and to inspire people to engage with the fascination of nature. Today our mission is focussed on saving wildlife, not alone but together with all the people that we engage and inspire. Our vision is for wildlife to be a part of everyone’s lives and for people to want to, and be enabled to, protect wildlife now and for the future.

Bristol Zoological Society cares for nearly 10,000 animals of 400 species, with nearly 1,400 threatened animals bred in 2018 and we conduct evidence-based conservation and research across 14 projects in 10 countries on 4 continents working through 31 local partner organisations.

Bristol Zoo Gardens, in the heart of the city, opened to the public in 1836. It is the fifth-oldest zoo in the world and the oldest outside a capital city. In 2013 we opened our sister-site, Wild Place Project in South Gloucestershire, with a vision for it to be a national centre for wildlife. Bear Wood, an immersive new 7.5-acre exhibit opens in Summer 2019 at Wild Place Project and we are in the process of developing a masterplan to achieve our ambitions for both sites.

In light of these amazing developments, we are now seeking a new Director of Development to lead on our fundraising and partnership activities. Working closely with the Chief Executive Dr Justin Morris and the Board of Trustees, the Director of Development will be responsible for professionalising the Development function at the Society and driving the function forward. Leading a small team, the Director of Development will be responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership of all development activities and will be expected to deliver on a strategy to enhance the Society’s engagement with supporters, donors and partners and increase philanthropic income.

Applicants will be passionate about Bristol Zoological Society’s mission and will bring a successful track record of building effective, long-term, high-value philanthropic relationships together with leadership experience. Applicants will have experience of developing and implementing an integrated and diverse fundraising strategy, including the setting of strategic objectives and targets. Applicants will have proven experience of creative fundraising from a variety of sources and building sustainable relationships. We welcome applications from all sections of the community.

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver who will support Bristol Zoological Society in identifying the widest possible field of qualified candidates and assist in their assessment against the requirements for the role.
