Professor of Electrochemical Materials

WMG is an academic department of the University of Warwick, with over 700 staff working across eight dedicated research and education centres.  With an exclusive focus upon manufacturing, innovation, and technology, it has a £180m annual programme that enables ongoing investment in state-of-the-art facilities and expertise.  It has an unmatched reputation for working alongside industrial partners in order to provide collaborative R&D, world-class education, and knowledge transfer. 

WMG’s Energy Innovation Centre (EIC) is a national facility for battery research across the R&D process from materials and electrochemistry through to application, integration and recycling / re-use. The centre has recently had a further £20M investment as part of the Energy Research Accelerator programme.  The postholder will be expected to play an academic leadership role in the EIC, and this new post will complement existing expertise in battery materials, battery manufacturing processes, battery pack design, and battery recycling and re-use.

Applications are sought from highly experienced academics with an established body of academic research in areas related to battery electrochemistry and electrochemical materials. She or he will have an international recognition for published work as well as a sustained history of obtaining grant funding, familiarity with working alongside industrial partners, and the ability to operate in a collegiate manner with academics from other disciplines.  Crucially, she or he will be passionate about the future of battery research and applications and WMG’s role in delivering solutions to some of the technological challenges that R&D in this area will face.

The successful applicant will have full access to WMG’s extensive laboratory and industrial scale-up facilities (including an industrial-scale cell manufacturing pilot line), and will be able to take over existing staff and research activities as well as recruit new staff and PhD candidates in order to further their research objectives. The UK is particularly well-placed and well-funded in the field of battery research, and WMG has an enviable track record of securing funds for research and infrastructure – including most recently £108M for the construction of the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC).
