With a vibrant community of academics, students and professionals, the University of York is a world-leading institution with a reputation for excellent interdisciplinary research and outstanding teaching and learning. York has a unique heritage, distinctive profile and welcoming culture; yet at the same time, it continues to evolve, embracing the values of modern society and acting as a champion for diversity and inclusion. Every aspect of life at the University of York is informed by our founding principles of excellence, equality and opportunity for all.

With a turnover of £367 million, 17,000 students and 4,000 staff, the University makes significant contributions to economy, society and culture through research and its impact, addressing some of the key challenges of our time. The University will continue to make significant investments to enhance our research and its translation and the fabric and estate of the institution as we develop a bold research agenda for a new strategic plan.

It is in this exciting context that the University is now looking to appoint a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor (PVC) for Research to lead and develop research strategy and policy across the University. The University has a strong commitment to research across disciplinary boundaries and has established a position of leadership nationally and internationally in a range of fields. The PVC for Research will build on this strong record, providing dynamic intellectual leadership for a diverse University with an international outlook, and leading the next phase of York’s research strategy as it responds to the evolving research landscape. The role will champion growth of research income from public funders and charities, and also through industrial engagement and collaborations within and beyond the UK. It will position the University to work at scale with other institutions in addressing the major research challenges of the age.

We are looking for an ambitious and innovative research leader with a strong track record of published research at the highest level and a significant track record of research funding. The PVC for Research will have a proven ability in strategic and analytical thinking in relation to research, and an understanding of how to deliver the highest quality research, both disciplinary and inter/multidisciplinary, across the sciences, social sciences and humanities.

We particularly welcome applications from female candidates, and candidates from minority ethnic backgrounds, who are under-represented at senior management level in the institution.#EqualityatYork

Applications will close at 9:00am BST on 26 July 2019.
