Established by Royal Charter in 1996, Sport England is the arms-length body of Government responsible for growing and developing grassroots sport, and getting more people active across England. We believe that being physically active enriches lives, builds stronger communities and creates a healthier, happier nation. That’s why we want everyone in England regardless of their age, background or level of ability to feel able to participate in sport and physical activity. Our mission is to transform sport and physical activity so that people and places everywhere can benefit from being active. We do this by providing expertise, insight and funding to improve the nation’s long term physical and mental health.
We have started to increase the diversity of leadership across our partners as a critical way of hearing from and reaching the different people we wish to engage. This recognises the value that is gained from employing people with different experiences and perspectives. The evidence is clear that diversity better equips organisations and contributes to decision-making. It ultimately benefits the customers we serve and who are competing in the market.
In order to help us in our efforts to diversify leadership, we’re working alongside leading executive search firm, Perrett Laver, and selected partners on the identification and training of at least 140 diverse “Board ready” candidates. Selected partners mentioned include Sport and Recreation Alliance, Birkbeck University, Women on Boards, Rimjhim Consulting, Stonewall and the Activity Alliance.
Our funded partners will then be able to advertise upcoming Board vacancies to the successful cohort of candidates, and Perrett Laver and the consortium of partners will work closely with our funded organisations and potential Board candidates to provide networking and deployment support accordingly.
We welcome applications from people of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds; from all faiths and beliefs; from every part of the country; who identify as any sexuality and/or gender; any impairment; and regardless of age or marital status. We also seek people with a range of experiences and skills. Experience of working in sport is not essential but passion, enthusiasm and a desire to make a difference in the industry is. Given the charitable status of many sports boards, non-executive positions are unlikely to be remunerated but travel expenses may be reimbursed.
This project will be conducted in four tranches. We identified the first cohort in early 2019, the second will be identified by October 2019, the third by March 2020, and the final cohort by December 2020. Alongside this, the diversity of sports boards will be regularly audited and targets for improvement of diversity across sports boards may be set.
