The Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU) is a leading national clinical trials unit (CTU) within the College of Medical & Dental Sciences at the University of Birmingham specialising in the design, conduct and analysis of definitive clinical trials and test evaluation studies. BCTU, under the Directorship of Professor Peter Brocklehurst, sits within the Institute of Applied Health Research and is one of the largest CTUs in the UK, undertaking high-quality, late-phase clinical trials, and diagnostic and test evaluation studies across a wide range of disease areas in both the primary and secondary care settings. The Unit employs over 110 staff, coordinating approximately 60 studies with a current research grant budget of circa £40 million.


BCTU are now looking to appoint a Deputy Director who will be responsible for the oversight of the whole Unit including leading and managing the team of trial management staff ensuring effective delivery across a portfolio of clinical trial research projects and ensuring appropriate management of resources, staff development, planning and budgets across the area. The Deputy Director will lead the development and application of the Unit’s quality management system ensuring compliance at all times, and will be instrumental in optimising income through a range of sources including NIHR, Government, charitable organisations and industry.


The appointee will have a proven track record of conducting, designing and leading the management of clinical trials including resource and budgetary management. S/he will have experience in developing and leading a large team of staff from a broad range of professional backgrounds, ensuring a high level of performance management. They will possess an excellent knowledge of clinical trials regulations and standard operating procedures, including experience of process improvement, as well as knowledge of the governance, development and research opportunities in clinical trials.
