This is a very exciting time in Optometry with the great expansion of roles and opportunities being developed to deliver eye care across the UK. To celebrate the year 2020 the University of the Higlands and Islands is planning to start delivering a new BSc (Hons) Optometry degree which is directly based on the innovative optometry curriculum devised by Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. The initial development phase of the post is funded by the European Social Fund and Scottish Funding Council as part of Developing Scotland’s Workforce in the Scotland 2014-2020 European Structural and Investment Fund Programme.
The University is now looking for an experienced optometrist who is enthusiastic about optometry education and has a major interest and experience in teaching. During the development phase the role will be dedicated to curriculum development and once the degree course starts, the postholder will be involved in delivering tutorials and lectures, demonstrating clinical techniques, supervising and supporting staff and students within undergraduate student practice clinics.
The post will also involve mentoring and supporting students as a personal tutor as well as supporting the management of the student placement programme. The assessment of student performance will also be a key part of this role with other members of the staff as will the ongoing development of curriculum to enhance the student experience and identify new learning opportunities.
The candidate should be eligible for General Optical Council (GOC) registration as an Optometrist, have relevant experience in optometry education and a postgraduate academic qualification (e.g. MSc/MRes/MPhil/PhD). A teaching qualification would be an additional advantage, as would clinical experience either in a community optometry or hospital setting.
