York is a city famous for its Minster, its history, its rail and confectionery heritage, and its traditional championing of social justice. While all these elements remain important parts of York’s offer, the city has many more strings to its bow, some of them surprising to those not already in the know.

Voted the UK’s Best Place to Live 2018 by the Sunday Times, York welcomes 7 million visitors from around the world each year. It is also the country’s first UNESCO City of Media Arts with aspirations to add UNESCO World Heritage Site status to its assets too. York has two universities with strengths in computer science, bio-science, film, television and media, with strong showings in the league tables for research quality, student satisfaction and graduate prospects. York also has the highest percentage of independent retailers and restauranteurs of any UK city, perhaps a reflection of a wider independence of mind.

The local economy also has a number of genuine strengths; tourism is of course high profile, perhaps less well known though is York’s place as a world leader in bio-economy and in Artificial Intelligence (particularly in relation to the safety of autonomous vehicles). Equally, our digital, rail-tech and financial services sectors boast a range of innovative businesses working nationally and internationally.

This said, York is not resting on its laurels. With planning permission having been granted earlier this year for the 44 hectare York Central site beside the railway station, the access to cutting-edge international contemporary artists provided by our membership of the UNESCO creative cities network, and the major place-based branding exercise which is underway, York feels like a city on the verge of the next great leap forward. No wonder, perhaps, that The Sunday Times, describes York as a “mini metropolis” which “has a rich history and grand ambitions to be one of the best-connected hubs in Europe, with cool cafes, destination restaurants and innovative companies.”

Make It York is the city’s Destination Management Organisation. Our mission is to grow the economic prosperity and wider wellbeing of York. All our work can therefore be traced back to the twin themes of economy and place.

Having been established in 2015 by founding Chair, Jane Lady Gibson, the organisation is now looking to appoint her successor. Jane has served four years as Chair of Make It York as well as three years previously as Chair of Visit York, now a part of Make It York. As part of her succession planning, she recruited new Managing Director, Sean Bullick, at the beginning of 2019, with a view to utilising his wealth of experience of economic development in cities.

It is in this evolving and exciting context that Make It York is looking to appoint a Chair of its Board of Directors. The Chair will have experience of leading and running major organisations as well as a strong understanding of contemporary corporate governance. Make It York is a multi-partner, multi-faceted organisation and therefore the Chair will need to be able to engage with a variety of stakeholders. They must have the ability to act as a visible ambassador for the City and Make It York; and be comfortable and effective when engaging with major partners, benefactors and supporters.

Make It York wishes to continue to strengthen the diversity of its governance and actively encourages applications from individuals from underrepresented groups.
