It is in this exciting context, we are looking for a Chair and Independent Governors to join our Board of Governors. 


Northumbria University are looking for an exceptional individual to chair our Board of Governors, leading the Board in supporting the journey towards our Vision. 

The next Chair of our Board will be an experienced strategic leader with a professional profile, a national and global perspective and a modern, dynamic outlook. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about the transformative power of education and research, with experience of current good governance practices. They will be politically adept, with proven strategic ability and good commercial acumen. The Chair will be committed to the University’s Vision, with the drive and determination to support the University to deliver its ambitious Strategy.  

The role of Chair is a remunerated post and payment of £25k per annum will be offered.

Independent Governors

Northumbria University are seeking to appoint up to four new Independent Governors to support the journey towards our Vision, who have the motivation, commitment and ambition to help shape Northumbria’s future. Successful candidates will bring a range of additional skills, expertise and experience to our Board. 

We are interested in hearing from innovative and dynamic individuals from diverse backgrounds who are passionate about the transformative power of education and research. We are looking for individuals who have demonstrable senior executive and/or non-executive experience in one or more of these fields:

financial strategy, reporting and auditing (qualified accountant or auditor with FCA and FCMA or equivalent professional standing);
external financing strategies and models, including experience around raising bank loan, equity, or other non-traditional funding;
organisational change and transformation;
innovation, enterprise and income development and diversification
technological transformation and digital disruption;
strategic risk, ethics, assurance and social responsibility;
senior level leadership of a Higher Education provider or an education sector body (e.g. regulatory, funding or representative) in the UK or overseas.

The role of Independent Governor is not remunerated. However, should successful candidates progress to become Chair of one of our Board Committees, annual payment of £7.5k per annum will be offered.
