The UCL Institute of Education (IOE) has a world-leading reputation for education research, coming 1st in the 2019 QS World Rankings by Subject for Education for the sixth year running. Founded in 1902, and with more than 8,000 students and 800 staff, it attracts students from over 100 countries around the world.

The IOE is seeking to appoint a Professor of Education and an excellent leader to the role of Head of the Department of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment (CPA).  CPA is a world-leading centre for geography, business, mathematics, science and humanities education. The Department also hosts top-rated initial teacher education (ITE) programmes, incorporating Secondary PGCE and Teach First, innovative Masters programmes and a wide range of continuing professional development courses. This vacancy provides an exciting opportunity to strengthen further the Department’s highly distinctive research-led approach to ITE, in a context of unparalleled capacity to specialise in a diverse range of subject disciplines. We are seeking to appoint a dynamic Professor with a distinguished international reputation for scholarly research in an area complementary to the Department. Although the appointment will be made at Professorial level, we welcome applications from Readers or Associate Professors who can demonstrate that they meet the criteria for a Professorship.

In addition to outstanding scholarship, you will offer inspirational and strategic leadership qualities, encourage the highest quality research and ensure further development of teaching and knowledge exchange across the department.  You will be supported in the role of Head of Department by a full-time departmental administrator, finance and HR business partners, and the Pro-Director of Operations. As Head of Department you will report to the Pro-Director of Academic Development and be an active member of the IOE’s Senior Management Team, supporting the IOE’s position as the world-leading Faculty for education and social science.

Perrett Laver, the appointed advisers of the IOE, are conducting an executive search exercise alongside the public advertisement for this role. Perrett Laver will support the Selection Committee in the discharge of its duties.

We particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates as they are under-represented within UCL at this level.

We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible.

Applications should consist of:

1. A full curriculum vitae detailing career, achievements and leadership experience, with a detailed publications list, arranged in descending chronological order under the headings: books; chapters in books; articles in journals; published conference papers; and other output.

2. A covering letter addressing the role description and person specification.  Your response to the criteria is an essential part of the selection process and thus a failure to provide this information will mean that the application will not be considered. An answer to any of the criteria such as 'Please see attached CV' will not be considered acceptable.

3. An electronic copy of two journal article length publications which you feel best support your application.

4. The names and contact details of three referees.

For informal enquiries about the role, please contact Yana Shevkirova via or +44 (0) 20 7340 6208.
