Academic Director, Sydney Manufacturing Hub

About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is Australia’s first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7,500 permanent staff supporting over 70,000 students.

Sydney is both a distinctly Australian university and a truly global one. We have had, from our beginning, a mission to pursue the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge and understanding, attuned to the aspirations of society. We remain committed to that mission. And more than 160 years later, our aim remains clear: to harness our research intensity
and comprehensiveness – a breadth and depth unique in Australia – to address some of the major global challenges of our time. Our foundational disciplinary strengths reside in six Faculties, which provide oversight to individual schools and discipline areas. Moreover, we have identified a number of multidisciplinary challenge spaces to which we are bringing the
combined depth and breadth of our expertise, and the passions of researchers from across our faculties.

Underpinning this bold research strategy is our commitment to research infrastructure via our operation of a world-class enterprise of core research facilities. These research facilities provide the link between excellence in research capacity and research excellence. The Sydney Manufacturing Hub is the University’s newest core research facility and will provide
outstanding research capability in the area of materials processing and, in particular, additive manufacturing.

The inaugural Academic Director of the Sydney Manufacturing Hub will provide academic leadership, creating a worldclass,
internationally recognised facility for research and research training. This is a University-wide academic leadership
role that is a conduit into the University leadership, decision making, and strategy. Concomitantly, it is an academic appointment and we expect that the successful applicant will have a demonstrated capacity to balance academic leadership and personal scholarship.

About you

The successful candidate will have a wide network of established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of the Sydney Manufacturing Hub, and the University. You will have extensive experience in people leadership and management within the
higher education/knowledge worker sector, experience in working with industry, and a track record in managing financial sustainability, infrastructure and the operational needs and practices of an academic unit.

Term and remuneration

The position of the Academic Director of the Sydney Manufacturing Hub is a senior academic leadership role. As such, this appointment will be offered initially as a five-year fixed-term appointment, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Further appointments are possible, subject to performance and other factors. A competitive remuneration package (including up to 17% employer’s contribution to pension) will be negotiated.
Underpinning this senior leadership appointment is a continuing academic role in the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and
Mechatronic Engineering (AMME), in the Faculty of Engineering. The appointee will revert to this substantive academic role in the case where the Directorship appointment is for one term only. In the first three years, the role will be 100% dedicated to the successful establishment of the research facility and thereafter will revert to a fractional arrangement with AMME of
order 50/50. It is expected that the successful applicant will contribute to the teaching and research of their home school and the faculty throughout their appointment.
