The Academy of Theatre and Dance (ATD, formerly de Theaterschool) is one of the academies of the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK) and is the Netherlands’ premier training school for all theatre and dance disciplines at bachelor and master’s degree level. The Academy is one of its kind in the Netherlands and has all relevant resources under one roof to enhance the student’s artistic talent, ambitions and dreams.

In 2016, ATD established the DAS Graduate School which serves as a bridge between academics, arts and society. The DAS Graduate School is the first institute in the Netherlands to bring master’s, doctorate and research programmes together under one roof in order to strengthen the development of advanced education in the performing arts. The graduate school offers four Master and Research programmes that aim to contribute jointly to the further development of education and research, DAS Theatre, DAS Choreography, DAS Creative Producing and DAS Research.

Job Description

The ATD is now seeking for a new Lector with the ability to lead the DAS Graduate School, and who will show ingenuity in exploring and successfully setting up joint educational and research collaborations with other private and public partners. This role will require an individual with a passion for performing artistic research in the intersection between academics and practice, and experience and talent for organizational management, strategy and policy. 

Person specification

The Lector and Head of the DAS Graduate School will be a bridge-builder who will successfully position the graduate school within and outside the ATD and actively seek opportunities for joint impact-driven initiatives in the intersection of the academic and art sector.

The new Lector and Head of DAS Graduate School

  • is a visible and recognised researcher and peer in a relevant field for the ATD, a PhD or equivalent academic grade is required;
  •  is an advocate of community building, concerning academic staff, support staff and students;
  • has practical knowledge in a field relevant to the ATD;
  • can create a vision related to DAS Graduate School’s mission and its future positioning within the ATD and the art sector at large;
  • is able to utilize the potential of the Graduate School and is willing and capable to make change happen with innovative and inspirational approaches;
  • is intrinsically motivated to connect with other relevant knowledge hubs and stakeholders in the professional field to co-create and make an impact;
  • has experience in administration and management, preferably an academic organization or other complex organization
  • is known for an entrepreneurial and groundbreaking drive.

Terms of employment

The Amsterdam University of the Arts offers an inspiring and challenging international and academic environment. The position offered is on a basis of 0,8 FTE for a period of 4 years. The maximum monthly salary will be €7.284,86 on the basis of full-time work. Additionally, the Amsterdam University of the Arts an attractive package of secondary employment benefits which include 8% holiday allowance and a regular year-end bonus of 8.3%. The salary and benefits are based on the Collective Agreement for Universities of Applied Sciences.

Applications will be considered by the selection committee in October. Perrett Laver will conduct preliminary in-depth discussions with longlisted candidates in October and the selection committee will then meet to decide on a shortlist of candidates in November. These individuals will subsequently be invited for formal interviews for the position will take place in November. Selection of and negotiations with the preferred candidate will take place thereafter.
