At the British Heart Foundation (BHF), there’s one thing that motivates all of us and that’s funding research to beat the world’s biggest killers – heart and circulatory diseases.  The BHF was founded in 1961 and is the leading independent funder of cardiovascular research in the UK and one of the leading funders globally.

The life-saving work of BHF is primarily advanced through long-term investment in medical research with an aspiration to invest c.£500m in cardiovascular research over the next five years.

We are looking to appoint an Associate Medical Director (Research) to join our senior research leadership team. Reporting to the Medical Director and working with the other Associate Medical Directors, you will lead the delivery of our Research Strategy, representing the BHF at a senior level in meetings with other research funders and bodies whilst acting as a spokesperson for the BHF. You will also have responsibility for overseeing the scientific review process of research grant applications, leading a small team of Senior Research Advisors and Research Advisors and working in close liaison with the Joint Heads of Research Funds, the Director of Research Relations and the administrative team. You will be a key contact for researchers seeking advice and guidance on BHF funding.

You will have substantial expertise in cardiovascular research, a strong record of grant funding and an internationally recognised track record of scientific achievement. You will also have experience of academic leadership and management and of being on grant panel committees, editorial boards of scientific journals and executive boards of professional societies.

This position is available on a full-time basis, but a part time appointment of not less than 0.6 FTE may also be considered depending on individual circumstances.

The closing date for applications is midday BST on Monday 14th October.  Our process involves submitting your CV and a covering letter, which should outline your interest and explain how you meet the role’s criteria. Please note we will only accept applications via this method.

Interviews will be held 5th November 2019 at our London head office.
