The University of Sussex is one of the UK’s foremost higher education institutions. The University is consistently ranked amongst the top 30 universities in the UK, with 75% of research activity at the University considered as world-leading or internationally excellent. Since its inception, the University has forged its own path and to this day it retains a culture that is wedded to creativity, universal values, international engagement and excellence in education and research. We have just launched a new strategic framework “Sussex 2025” which reimagines the pioneering spirit of the original purpose of the University, but does so for new times and a new generation. A key component of this framework focusses on “researching with impact”; challenging convention through an interdisciplinary, experimental approach, with a constant commitment to excellence.
The University now seeks to appoint a new Head of School for the School of Law, Politics and Sociology. The School brings together the Sussex Law School and the Departments of Politics and Sociology. These three vibrant academic units are all committed to excellence in teaching, and they are all engaged in cutting-edge research.
Reporting to the Provost, the new Head will be an individual of exceptional quality and ability. The appointee will have strong leadership, influencing, and engagement skills. The post requires vision and imagination, an acuity for strategy as well as operational effectiveness, an enthusiasm for delivery, and outstanding leadership and management skills.
The Head of School will work closely with the Heads of Department, other Heads of School and individual academics as well as administrative and support staff. The appointed individual will be responsible for all members of academic and tutoring staff within the School. S/he will establish and maintain an effective relationship with the appropriate Head of Professional Service.
The closing date for applications is midnight (GMT) on Friday 6th December 2019.
Informal Visits will take place on Wednesday 29th January 2020 and Formal Interviews on Thursday 30th January 2020.
