At the University of Duisburg-Essen, the position of

Director of the Science Support Center (m/f/o)

(Pay Grade 15 TV-L or A 15 LBesG NRW if the conditions under Civil Service Law are met) 

needs to be filled as soon as possible.

The Science Support Center (SSC) supports the Rectorate in the (further) development and implementation of the Research Strategy of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). Additionally, it offers scientists a comprehensive range of services in the field of research management. More specifically, the SSC supports UDE’s researchers with their application for research funding within all major research funding programmes, with the development and exploitation of university intellectual property, and with setting up industry cooperation, spin-offs and start-ups. The SSC hosts the Graduate Center Plus, which bundles interdisciplinary qualification offers and programmes for the promotion of junior scientists.

The strategic tasks of the Director of the SSC include advising the Rectorate on the development of UDE's research profile and on fundamental issues related to research and research funding, supervising strategic research partnerships and developing strategies for research-based technology transfer. The operational tasks include the management of SSC staff and budget and the representation of the SSC both inside and outside the University.

Your profile

  • Completed academic degree and PhD;
  • Several years of professional experience in a research environment, including project and process management, and a thorough understanding of the research landscape;
  • Demonstrable leadership and management experience;
  • A passion for the development of world-leading research and innovation; a strong analytical competence and innovative strength;
  • Affinity with technology transfer and its processes; experience in the field of spin-offs and start-ups is an advantage;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Excellent command of written and spoken German as well as English;
  • Team player with an inclusive and determined approach to leadership, encouraging ideas, initiative and innovation in others whilst establishing a high-performing culture;
  • Receptive and responsive, takes responsibility and stands behind decisions taken;
  • Energy and resilience.
