The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is the UK’s centre of excellence for oceanographic sciences. One of the top five institutions of its kind in the world, its remit is to provide national capability and leadership in big ocean science. On 1 November 2019, the NOC entered a new and exciting phase of its history as it gained its independence from NERC-UKRI to become an independent, self-governing organisation with charitable status.

Comprised of a vibrant community of around 650 staff covering a range of specialist fields, backgrounds and experience, the National Oceanography Centre is a truly multi-disciplinary centre undertaking and enabling world-class science and technological development.  It is a community in which each employee plays a crucial role in advancing the frontiers of science and knowledge through their world-leading research and knowledge sharing - all with the ultimate aim of contributing to the health of the oceans and thereby improving the world in which we live. The work is driven by a strong sense of values and purpose and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one NOC’ approach.

The NOC is now seeking a highly experienced and strategic professional as its new Associate Director of Government, International and Public Engagement. The appointee will oversee and lead the Communications team and the International and Strategic Partnerships Office. They will drive the development and implementation of a media relations strategy and bring the National Oceanography Centre’s mission to life with communications products and content that will successfully engage with the public, the government, donors and other current and future stakeholders in order to secure local and global exposure and profiling opportunities for NOC. Reporting to the Chief Executive, and working collaboratively with the other Associate Directors, they will lead on the implementation of the 2020 – 2025 Strategic Priorities and will guide the NOC’s transition to a charity, setting it on a path to becoming the worlds’ most innovative oceanographic institution.

The preferred candidate will be able to demonstrate and evidence delivering creative communications and public affairs strategies to advance reputation, influence and connectivity at a senior level and within a large, high-profile and complex organisation. S/he will be an outstanding team leader, motivating and supporting colleagues with varying experience and backgrounds to achieve their best and working innovatively and inclusively with a range of different stakeholders with different priorities.

Applications should consist of a full CV and a brief covering letter (2-3 pages) outlining how you meet the selection criteria. The deadline for applications is noon GMT on Friday 17th January 2020.
