A unique chance to create a better world through education

Since its inception in Geneva in 1968, the International Baccalaureate has sought to bring about positive, tangible change through education. Now in our 51st year, we are seeking a Board Chair who can support the IB’s next steps in an ever-changing world.

The IB was founded in a post-war landscape where boundaries and borders maintained fear and division. The mission of our founders was one of hope, ambition and peace: to create a better world through education.

We are a community of educators and learners working together to create a positive impact in over 5,000 schools with a presence in over 150 countries. We aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people by offering a challenging international curriculum that supports active lifelong learning. We take a holistic and rigorous approach to assessment. We include community service as a key feature in our educational model. We help our educators to be the best possible by providing high quality professional development services.

We are proud that independent reviews show that IB students regularly perform above their peers in post-secondary transitions to higher education.

Chair of the Board of Governors

The Board of Governors is the ultimate governing body of the IB with overall responsibility for ensuring delivery of its mission and long-term financial health. It sets and oversees the development of the IB strategy and agrees policies and procedures to ensure its effective delivery. The Board focuses on the long-term success and sustainability of the organization by identifying opportunities to create and preserve value and identifying and mitigating risks which may impact the IB and its community.

With the pending retirement of the incumbent Chair, the IB Board has commenced the process to appoint an experienced and talented individual who will further build on the IB’s strengths and advance the mission of the organization.

We are looking for an eminent leader with prior or current executive experience in a multi-national, multi-cultural organization. Ideally, our next Chair will have relevant experience serving as Director, Governor or Trustee of a multinational and/or charity board. A demonstrable and passionate commitment to education - and specifically a reputation as a leader or public supporter of international education - is highly desirable.

The position is moderately remunerated and reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed. The Chair needs to be able to give sufficient time on a voluntary basis. The time commitment includes a combination of quarterly board meetings and regular committee calls, as well as regular engagement with IB staff and the IB community. The Chair of the Board of Governors of the IB is elected for a three-year term and can serve two consecutive terms.

The IB values diversity and welcomes applications from all sections of the community.
