The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Tier I Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Sustainable Water Systems in a Changing Climate.  The Chair will be appointed at the rank of Full Professor (with tenure), they will bring a proven academic record of research excellence, impact and leadership.  A successful candidate at the Full Professor level will demonstrate evidence of an outstanding track record of publications in high quality journals, evidence of securing ongoing external research funding, effectiveness in teaching, and evidence of excellent graduate student supervision.

In alignment with the University of Calgary's Eyes High strategic vision and in support of its strategic academic and research priorities of leadership, teaching and research integration, and creating a dynamic environment to promote research excellence, the Chair will actively contribute to research, teaching and curriculum development, and student/postdoc supervision. It is expected they will take a leadership role within the Department, School and the University. Service to the University, profession and community is expected.  As a member and leader of the university community, the Chair will support, and contribute to, equity, diversity and inclusion and foster a positive working and learning environment.

It is expected that the successful candidate will already possess a strong research program and international recognition in the area of Sustainable Water Systems in a Changing Climate along with demonstrated ability to attract external funding to support research activities, supervise and mentor a strong research group, and provide research leadership. A demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on topics related to sustainable, environmental and/or water resource engineering is required.  To be eligible for consideration candidates must hold a B.Sc. in Civil or Environmental Engineering (or equivalent Engineering degree) and a Ph.D. in Engineering or a closely related discipline. All candidates must be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).

The Chair holder’s research will have a focus in one or more of the following areas with relevance to a changing climate:

  1. Asset management and urban water infrastructure
  2. Big data management of water systems (smart water systems)
  3. Uncertainty, risk and security of water systems
  4. Water, energy and food nexus

The Chair will benefit from a rich ecosystem, which includes world- class engineering scholars, a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, and a university community that supports transdisciplinary research, partnerships and collaborations, and research and education excellence. 

The Chair holder will also have a unique opportunity to engage with Advancing Canadian Wastewater Assets (ACWA). ACWA is an innovative partnership between the University of Calgary and the City of Calgary, as part of the Urban Alliance. Its goal is to advance water treatment technologies to address environmental and human health issues.
