Based in the globally renowned city of Manchester, Manchester School of Architecture is a unique collaboration between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester, drawing together more than 100 years of experience, with over 35 experts in their architectural fields and circa 900 students from over 50 countries.

It is a top-ten school, ranked 9th in the world in the 2019 QS World University Rankings. It has earned a reputation for the quality of its teaching and has delivered impressive graduate outcomes – success that is reflected in appraisals by a number of professional bodies. The School has strong links to practice and is connected to the city, the region and the world through numerous external partners. Its key strength lies in applied research and its relationship to the realities of contemporary architecture and urbanism. In terms of research, the School has developed a strong presence underpinned by the diverse range of work produced in the ateliers. Both research and studio practice are interwoven in their practical and applied engagement with the built environment. The School works in various groups and partnerships, alongside each other and with external agencies, delivering research that falls broadly into three themes: Built Heritage, Urban Futures, and Citizen Engagement.

With creativity and innovation at the heart of all we do, the School and the wider Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers an environment where educators, researchers and students can push boundaries and explore possibilities. Led by academics at the forefront of their field, the Faculty’s research portfolio is recognised nationally and internationally. Every day, our students, graduates and staff make a significant impact – in industry, in the community and through influencing the government. Our work has recently been recognised with both a Queen’s Anniversary Prize and a Times Higher Education Award. We collaborate well beyond traditional boundaries. Our Faculty’s relationship with the city goes from strength to strength, and that’s particularly true for Manchester School of Architecture. Its deep-rooted connections have a profound impact on teaching, research and graduate careers, providing staff and students with a wealth of opportunities to actively engage with the discipline.

Manchester Metropolitan’s ambitious plans are changing the shape of our University and our city. We have invested significantly in our estates and our people and we strive to deliver better outcomes for our students, inspiring them through a well-rounded university experience that is delivered in one of the UK’s best connected and most culturally vibrant cities. It is this commitment that has helped us become the 7th most popular university by applications and the 6th largest university in terms of students in the country.

As Head of the School of Architecture, you will be forging new partnerships, driving new innovation and extending our reach internationally. As part of our Faculty Executive Team, you will work closely with our other Heads of Department to lead an ambitious agenda and ensure that we provide real academic excellence. As such, we are seeking a Head of Architecture who can embrace this ethos and drive the School forward onto the next stage of its journey. The role is an opportunity for an ambitious, driven and collaborative leader in a world-leading School, and also a chance to play a prominent part in a Faculty and University with ambition, drive and international reputation.
