Executive Director to the LEO Foundation Skin Immunology Research Center (SIC), Department of Immunology and Microbiology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The new Skin Immunology Research Center (SIC) at the University of Copenhagen has been founded with the generous support of a 10-year grant from the LEO Foundation with the stated goal of becoming a world-leader in skin biology and immunology in health and disease. The Center is an integrated part of The Department of Immunology and Microbiology and will be closely connected with the University’s high-technology departments and centers, including omics technologies, advanced imaging, big data bioinformatics, clinical resources, and pharmaceutical sciences, well as the Faculty’s core animal facilities.  

The leadership of the SIC represents a once-in-a-life-time opportunity for an outstanding and determined scientist to build international impact, game-changing innovation, medically relevant discoveries, and to directly benefit patients. The Executive Director will be head of the SIC and accountable for its strategic development, scientific direction, faculty recruitment, and long-term growth and success and will build on the strategic plan laid out in the Center’s founding charter, but will continuously evaluate and evolve it to best fulfill the Center’s mission and vision.

The Search Committee are seeking an internationally recognized researcher within the general area of immunology and experience/interest in the skin and skin diseases and with an outstanding scientific track record, sufficient to qualify for a full professorship at the University of Copenhagen. The Executive Director will also have demonstrated visionary and inspirational leadership.

SIC Executive Directorship

The Executive Director will be head of the SIC and accountable for its strategic development, scientific direction, faculty recruitment, and long-term growth and success.

The Executive Director will build on the strategic plan laid out in the Center’s founding charter, but will continuously evaluate and evolve it to best fulfil the Center’s mission and vision.

Expectations

The Executive Director will:

  • Foster scientific eminence and productivity, as well as educational growth of the SIC, including the recruitment of new group leaders and career development of faculty and trainees
  • Manage the budget and allocate resources of the LEO Foundation grant and provide leadership for any additional external funding opportunities from government, foundation, or philanthropic sources
  • Lead daily operations, leadership meetings, research infrastructure, research support and general administration
  • Partner with the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and University leadership and other internal and external stakeholders
  • Leverage the Center’s Scientific Advisory Board for support and feedback on the Center’s scientific progress
  • Promote the international reputation and branding of the Center, including communication and outreach activities in collaboration with the Faculty´s Communication Department
  • Submit quarterly and annually written reports to the LEO Foundation, the Dean of the Faculty and the Rector of the University, who is the official grant holder, as well as the Head of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology.

The Executive Director will be appointed as professor at the University of Copenhagen and given the title as Executive Director by the Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. 

The Executive Director will be based full time at the Center, where she/he will lead a research laboratory addressing scientific areas in skin immunology and related scientific fields (as laid out in the center charter).

The Executive Director should be a role model and foster a supportive and collegial environment in which employees, students and collaborators collectively strive for scientific excellence and translational potential.

The Executive Director will divide her/his time between leadership responsibilities and research activities as a group leader.

The Executive Director will establish, evaluate, and – if and when necessary –modify the governing structure of the SIC to ensure coherent, agile and synergistic counselling and decision-making for the benefit of the scientific progress of the Center.

The Grant Agreement for the Center, and the applicable rules of University of Copenhagen, lay out in more detail the rights and obligations of the Executive Director.

Profile of the Executive Director

The Executive Director will be an internationally recognized researcher within the general area of immunology and experience/interest in the skin and skin diseases and with an outstanding scientific track record, sufficient to qualify for a full professorship at the University of Copenhagen. The Executive Director will also have demonstrated visionary and inspirational leadership.

In addition, the following documented qualifications would be desirable:

  • Experience as a leader at institutional or research program level
  • Experience as a leader of educational activities in a university context
  • Experience with collaborations and enhancing research results through interdisciplinary partnerships
  • An excellent understanding of the clinical translational aspects of skin immunology
  • Experience with branding, communication and outreach in and beyond academia
  • Ability to lead and mentor early career faculty and students
  • Experience in handling financial and managerial responsibilities in a comparable context.

Terms of Appointment

The Executive Director will be offered a full-time permanent professorship and a start-up package to establish an active research group.
