The Department’s varied research culture is one of the things which makes History at Exeter unique, and its strong interdisciplinary perspective and close work with related disciplines further enables world changing research. Over the last four years, research income has amounted to over £7.5 million, generated from a variety of bodies. The Department has also built successful partnerships both nationally and internationally, benefiting research impact and other areas including student employability. The University is now seeking a new Head of the Department of History. This is a superb opportunity to lead a renowned Department that is part of a successful and rapidly rising College and University. Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the College of Humanities, the Head of Department will be an internationally recognised scholar able to lead by example and to ensure an ambitious and supportive culture for colleagues. They will be an inclusive leader, appreciating the value of community with demonstrable ability to foster a positive environment across the Department, including for the benefit of a thriving early career research community, and to best enable the student voice. S/he will demonstrate world-leading and world-changing research with outputs consistently recognised as internationally excellent, coupled with a passion and the skills to lead and manage across research and education agendas. As a member of the College Executive, they will additionally contribute to the strategic direction and success of the College as a whole and represent the Department at senior levels. They will support the Department, College and University to build on successes into the future, particularly targeting international activity and greater diversity and representation among students and staff.
