The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) was established in 2005 as a joint activity of the University of Groningen and the Academic Hospital Groningen (AZG). With more than 10,000 employees the UMCG is one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands and is the only university medical center in the North of the Netherlands, providing top-level clinical and basic care to more than 3 million people living in the region. Research and education at the UMCG are funded through the University of Groningen, and the Faculty of Medical Sciences functions as an integral part of the University. The UMCG is demonstrably among the best scientific-educational institutes in the Netherlands in the area of medicine, dentistry and human movement sciences. Its world-leading research is characterized by a combination of fundamental and patient-oriented clinical research.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is a multidisciplinary and international department consisting of physicists, engineers, biologists and chemists. Researchers at the Department are mainly engaged in preclinical research in biomedical engineering. The Department has 10 permanent scientific staff members, 7 post-docs, support staff members, and PhD students. To enable the translation of technical innovation into first-in-human applications, the UMCG intends to start a Technical Innovation Center, thought to act as an incubator where basic research, as conducted in the BME Department, meets its clinical application.

The UMCG now seeks to appoint a new Head for the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The successful candidate will lead the BME Department which is part of the UMCG and embedded in the interdisciplinary Kolff Institute for Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science. One of the main tasks of the new Departmental Head is to stimulate innovative research by increasing collaborative efforts not only within the Department but also with other clinical departments or academic partners outside the UMCG.  Moreover, she/he will play a leading role in the prospected Technical Innovation Center to enhance implementation of technical innovations into clinical practice and as such promote first-in-human medical application.
