The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. The Institute provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The ICR leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment. Under the leadership of Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FRS, the Institute is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre.

The Royal Marsden opened in 1851 as the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer diagnosis, treatment and research. Today, The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust operates as a world-leading specialist cancer hospital whose mission is to continue to make a significant national and international contribution to cancer research and treatment, so that more people are cured, and quality of life is improved for those with cancer. The Royal Marsden, therefore, plays an important role in championing change and improvement in cancer care through research and innovation, education and leading-edge treatment.

The ICR and The Royal Marsden work in close partnership and together they form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, and are rated as one of the top five cancer centres globally. In 2006, 2011, and again in 2016, The Royal Marsden and The ICR were awarded a grant from The National Institute for Health Research to establish the UK’s only designated Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer, which drives pioneering research into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, as well as to translate advances in biomedical research into patient benefits. This acknowledges their position as the leading academic and clinical partnership for cancer in the UK.

The Royal Marsden is home to a unique repository for health data that is the result of two decades of in-house development and innovation. In line with the ongoing investment and innovation strategy, The Royal Marsden is commissioning an environment and novel technologies to establish a world-class data platform and informatics capabilities. As part of this, The ICR and The Royal Marsden are now seeking to appoint a Health Informatics Lead. This is a new position at the Institute with an honorary appointment at The Royal Marsden. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a BRC research strategy for health informatics aligning with national priorities and develop collaborative research programmes with other academic groups at The ICR, the Imperial Academic Health Science Centre, DATA-CAN Digital Innovation Hub, and other research communities. A key responsibility of the post will be to provide leadership for the health and clinical informatics developments across the BRC in conjunction with ICR and The Royal Marsden Chief Information Officers and The Royal Marsden’s Director of Performance and Information, Chief Research Information Officer and Chief Clinical Information Officer. It is expected that the post-holder will bring an established research programme to the BRC, and be responsible for delivering and overseeing a portfolio of impactful research in health informatics, translating findings into clinically actionable solutions used to understand, diagnose, prevent and treat cancer.
