The Royal College of Art is the UK’s only entirely postgraduate institute of art, design, architecture and related subjects, dedicated to teaching, research and knowledge exchange with industry.  In 2019, the RCA was named the world’s leading art and design institute for the fifth consecutive year by the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Located across three sites in central London (Kensington, White City and an expanding innovation campus at Battersea, due for completion in 2021), the RCA has around 2,400 students from more than 75 countries, with ambitious plans both to increase student places to 3,000 by 2022 and to launch new programmes, underpinned by world-class research. The RCA is a vibrant and distinctive blend of digital, virtual, haptic, physical, technical, archives and collections, which - allied to business systems and integration, digital transformation and delivery - provide a bedrock that enables the institute to remain a continuously high-performing world leader. The College has more than 500 permanent academic, technical and administrative staff, with more than 1,000 visiting lecturers and professors, including internationally renowned artists, designers, theorists and practitioners.

The RCA is now seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to be Chief Information Officer and Director of IT, Library and Technical Services (CIO/DILTS). Staff and students are supported academically by the Department of IT, Learning and Technical Services, led by the CIO/DILTS, who line manages the four heads of service for ICT, Technical Services, Digital Delivery, and the Library and Learning resources and, through the four heads of service, the largest workforce within the institute at some 140 people. The goal for ILTS is to support planned growth in teaching with new programmes of study where art and design are integrated with science and technology, and the development of flexible modes of learning; and to implement significant improvements to our underpinning ICT infrastructure services, and to continue to develop and deploy key MIS systems to support the modernisation of our operations and professional services.  Additionally, ILTS supports research and knowledge exchange activities, linking effectively with national and international themes where appropriate, allied to the RCA's STEAM agenda and opportunities arising from the UK Government's Industrial Strategy, enabling the College to undertake and translate research of world-leading and internationally excellent quality, with global impact.

The appointee will be a proven leader with demonstrable experience in leading complex teams for high performing and high profile organisations, from vision and strategy through to planning and operations. They will understand the strategic benefits of technology in the business, research and education sectors and will have a proven track record in delivering and developing standard and complete Digital and IT services to organisations comparable to the RCA. They will have strong interpersonal skills, the confidence to challenge accepted wisdom, as well as the ability to take strategic decisions that will improve the efficiency and the effectiveness of the RCA.
