The role of Director (Research Strategy) presents a unique opportunity to join the Vice-Provost (Research & Innovation) team as the key member delivering on big picture research strategy and opportunities aligned to Surrey’s USPs, including Digital Health, 5G, Space and AI. In leading the strategic development of the University’s research portfolio, the post holder will capitalise on existing research themes and develop new areas as opportunities arise. They will share responsibility for driving Surrey’s research & innovation agenda to grow scale, quality and distinctive capabilities in research, its impact, and innovation. They will foster relationships with strategic partners and collaborators to support large-scale funded initiatives. Collaborative and with exceptional interpersonal skills, they will work closely with the Director (Innovation Strategy), and as part of a wider team including: Research and Innovation Services, Doctoral College, the Surrey Research Park, and the academic research leadership, including Associate Deans of Research & Innovation.
The ideal candidate will have leadership experience in research strategy, familiarity with the funding landscape, and will bring broad knowledge and insight into contemporary trends in research to the role. They will command the respect of the academic community, and be an expert communicator with exceptional negotiating and influencing skills, with experience of complex stakeholder management and partnership building. Evidence of interest and experience in managing small teams, large budgets and complex bids is essential, alongside excellent programme and portfolio management skills.
