The Medical Research Council (MRC) is at the forefront of scientific discovery to improve human health. Our scientists tackle some of the greatest health problems facing humanity in the 21st century, from the rising tide of chronic diseases associated with ageing to the threats posed by rapidly mutating micro-organisms. The heart of our mission is to improve human health through world-class medical research. To achieve this, we support research across the biomedical spectrum, from fundamental lab-based science to clinical trials, and in all major disease areas. We work closely with the NHS and the UK Health Departments to deliver our mission, and give a high priority to research that is likely to make a real difference to clinical practice and the health of the population.

The MRC is investing more than £20m in a major new network in mouse genetics for disease modelling that will bring together a package of distinctive research Clusters across the UK with long-term partnerships with the Mary Lyon Centre at the Harwell Science Campus, Oxfordshire. The Network will be led by a National Director to capitalise on the UK’s international excellence in mouse and human genetics, and wider biomedical sciences. The Director will provide strategic leadership to the Network to maximise the role of the mouse as a platform for understanding human disease and opportunities to translate this knowledge towards improved diagnosis and treatment. They will have budgetary responsibility for the Network and competitively awarded research Cluster investments, and responsibility for driving partnership activities that promote its objectives.

The MRC is now seeking to appoint an outstanding scientist and visionary leader to establish and lead the National Mouse Genetics Network. The successful candidate will be an internationally recognised scientist with a track record of achievement and success in mouse genetics and/or its linkage with human genetics and pathology. He/she will demonstrate excellent communication skills and proven leadership and management experience in a complex multi-stakeholder environment, including the implementation of appropriate corporate and institutional governance activities. The appointee will demonstrate the ability to build effective partnerships across disciplines and interests, including with industry and other commercial organisations, to deliver broader ambitions.

An executive search is being undertaken by Perrett Laver in parallel with the public advertisement of the post. Perrett Laver will support the selection panel in the discharge of its duties, both to assist in the assessment of candidates against the requirements for the role and to identify the widest possible field of qualified candidates.

The closing date for applications is 09:00 (GMT) on Wednesday 27th May. Final interviews will take place on Monday 27th July 2020.
