About CUHK(SZ)

CUHK(SZ) is a research-intensive university with roots in the educational philosophy and academic systems of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Located in the Longgang District of Shenzhen, CUHK(SZ) was established in 2014 as a Mainland-Hong Kong joint venture collaboration with generous support from the Shenzhen Municipal Government. The mission of CUHK(SZ) is to advance the creation, preservation, application and dissemination of knowledge through the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and public service in a diverse range of disciplines, thereby serving the needs and enhancing the well-being of the citizens of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, China as a whole, and the wider world community.

CUHK(SZ) currently offers a broad spectrum of courses in its four Schools, including the School of Science and Engineering; the School of Management and Economics; the School of Humanities and Social Science; and the School Life and Health Sciences. There are also 3 new schools being established, viz. School of Medicine, School of Data Science and School of Music. To date, more than 5,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students are studying at CUHK(SZ); over time, student enrollments will grow to 7,500 undergraduate and 3,500 postgraduate students recruited from within China and overseas. English is the main medium of course instruction, and graduates are awarded CUHK degrees. The majority of the first two cohorts of graduates have proceeded to graduate studies abroad and those pursuing professional development are highly successful.

The new CUHK(SZ) School of Medicine

In January 2019, CUHK and CUHK(SZ) signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Shenzhen Municipal Government to establish a new School of Medicine adjacent to the CUHK(SZ) main campus. The new CUHK(SZ) School of Medicine aims to become an international medical centre that trains outstanding medical professionals, conducts innovative medical research, and provides a comprehensive range of modern high-quality medical services. The School will have a network of direct and affiliated teaching hospitals in Shenzhen.

The CUHK(SZ) School of Medicine will follow the successful clinical academic model of CUHK Faculty of Medicine, and a Joint Task Force comprising representatives from CUHK and CUHK(SZ) has been established to lead and oversee the project. The first cohort of undergraduate students will enroll in 2021, with the student population expanding over the next decade to approximately 6,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students across a range of clinical disciplines, including medicine; Chinese medicine; medical informatics; pharmaceutical science; public health administration; nursing; and biomedical engineering. The School of Medicine’s purpose-built campus of 550,000m2 will be completed in 2024.

The Role

The position calls for a distinguished leader in academic medicine with the ability to execute an ambitious vision for the establishment of a new medical school.

The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment alongside the deanship appointment. The role of Dean is typically held for two consecutive terms, each of three to five years.

As the academic and executive head of the new School, the Founding Dean is expected to:

  • Oversee the overall development of the new School under the guidance of the Joint Task Force and coordinate the developmental work for the project;Lead the development and implementation of a medical education curriculum meeting both international and national standards;
  • Pioneer the establishment and operation of a teaching hospital as a hub for medical training, research base and exemplary service;
  • Engage stakeholders of the two medical schools in CUHK(SZ) and CUHK for complementary developments;
  • Maintain strong relationships with internal and external co-workers and stakeholders;
  • Provide strong academic leadership and build a solid foundation for the new School;
  • Launch extensive recruitment to attract qualified academic clinicians and researchers to join the School;
  • Engage actively and effectively in developing policies and procedures of the School;
  • Develop the School in due course to launch new academic programmes and curricula that meet the current and future needs in medical health care system of mainland China;
  • Discharge administrative responsibilities in respect of academic, staffing, financial and student matters.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated achievements in academic leadership and the strategic management of medical education in higher education institutions; a long-term vision for the development of the new medical school; and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Candidates for this position should have an excellent academic standing suitable for appointment at the level of full Professor as well as successful experience in building or transforming a medical school/programme. Clinical background and experience in hospital set-up would be preferred. Understanding of the medical community and social environment in both Hong Kong and Greater Bay Area will be an advantage.
