The University of Cambridge is one of the world’s foremost universities and a renowned centre for research, education and scholarship. It has 22,500 students, (of whom 40 per cent are not UK-nationals) and employs about 12,500 people in over 150 departments, faculties, and institutes. The University has an annual income of almost £2 billion, of which approximately £746 million is the combined turnovers of Cambridge Assessment and Cambridge University Press. Its mission is "to contribute to society through the pursuit of education, learning and research at the highest levels of excellence".

The University is seeking to appoint two external members of the Audit Committee; one to start on 1st September 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, and the second on 1st January 2021, for a full term of four years. The Audit Committee is central in providing public assurance that the University has in place appropriate financial and governance management structures. It is the only University Committee with a majority of external members. Its membership comprises the chair (one of the external members of the Council) and eight members of which four are external members. The Audit Committee reports directly to the Council, the University’s trustee body.

Applications are sought from individuals who will support the University in maintaining its international position as one of the world’s foremost universities in an increasingly competitive environment. Suitable candidates will have held senior leadership posts within organisations of significant scale and complexity, and be able to demonstrate relevant leadership and change management experience. This ideally includes experience of managing risks in a wide range of areas. An international perspective and experience of varying forms of organisational governance environments would be desirable.

Cambridge is committed to diversity and inclusion at all levels and in all forms. The University wishes to encourage applications that will strengthen diversity in its governance.
