Situated in one of the UK’s best-connected and most culturally vibrant cities, the Manchester Metropolitan University Institute of Sport is a new and exciting hub: combining education, research and industry to create an innovative, interdisciplinary home for sport in the region and a unique, globally recognised sports brand.
Building on the University’s strong track record in sports-related research, education and knowledge exchange, it will bring together expertise and vision to create a new force in sports-related higher education. Located in a new facility on Oxford Road, housing state of the art research facilities and dedicated learning and teaching spaces, MMUIoS will be a truly inter-disciplinary space serving staff and students from across the University and providing a focal point for partnership development. Encompassing sport, business, management, law, and integrated health and care disciplines, MMUIoS will be focused on meeting the future workforce needs of a diverse sector and actively supporting the city’s ambitions to develop sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing across the Greater Manchester region.
Bringing together partners from the city and beyond, the Institute will enhance the impact that the sports industry has on the wider community, both in terms of the direct economic effect of sport and leisure-related commerce, and the benefits of health, wellbeing, local regeneration, social cohesion and culture. Through strategic partnerships, MMUIoS will shape policy and give opportunities for local businesses, the Local Authority, healthcare providers, elite sports and National Governing Bodies to access state of the art research facilities and expertise.

As Director of the Institute of Sport, you will be forging new partnerships, driving innovation and extending our reach internationally. You will work closely with Heads of Department across our Faculties to lead an ambitious agenda and foster interdisciplinary working. We are therefore seeking a strategic, collaborative leader with a track record of successful relationship building across a variety of stakeholders.
This is an opportunity for a driven and visionary individual to grow a new and emerging venture and play a prominent part in an institution with ambition, drive and international reputation. Successful candidates will have strong ambassadorial and networking skills; and will bring extensive leadership experience in the sports industry with responsibility for leading a sporting body, sports organisation or elite sporting club, or have a very strong academic record and standing in teaching and research or knowledge exchange.
