Chinese International School (CIS) is now inviting applications for the role of Executive Director of Advancement.

Over the course of the 2020-21 academic year, CIS will be launching a strategic planning process around “Vision 33”—the School’s ambitious road map for the coming decade in the run-up to its 50th anniversary in 2033. In partnership with the Board of Governors and the Head of School, the Executive Director of Advancement will play an important role in building “Vision 33,” as well as in strengthening and diversifying the CIS’s fundraising efforts to realise this vision.

About CIS

Founded in 1983, CIS is a private school in Hong Kong offering an international education from Reception to Year 13 in two languages – Mandarin and English. CIS places a strong emphasis on integrating Chinese culture into its curriculum and broke new ground with the launch in 2013 of a residential study centre in Hangzhou for all Year 10 students. The school has approximately 1500 students representing over 30 nationalities. CIS is committed to academic excellence, with a mission to inspire students to a lifelong love of learning. Further information about CIS is available here.

Advancement at CIS

The foundation for the School’s fundraising is an Annual Fund, which started in 2009. The Annual Fund raises US$2 to $2.5m every year, almost exclusively from current parents, with approximately 60% of the school’s 1,000 families participating. In the area of capital fundraising, CIS ran its Phoenix Soaring capital campaign from 2013 to 2018, raising US$60m for the construction of the 10-storey New Tower and other renovation works.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of School and serving as a member of the School’s Leadership Team, the Executive Director of Advancement will lead a team of specialists in development, communications and alumni relations, working closely with the Head of School, Executive Director of Community Relations, Director of Finance and Business Administration, and the Board of Governors to develop and manage an annual budget for fundraising, as part of a multiyear vision for advancement at CIS.

The successful candidate will be someone creative, energetic and committed to improving the lives of young people through innovative and meaningful educational initiatives, with the professional skills required to grow an ambitious and strategic fundraising program for the School.

Candidates for the role will have:

  • Senior fundraising and management experience with proven and increasing responsibility, as well as clear and progressive achievements;
  • Demonstrated skill and success with the development and implementation of fundraising strategies, including major giving, donor recognition and stewardship, and capital campaigns;
  • A successful track record of frontline fundraising, including personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding new and existing major individual and institutional donors, and a record of achieving annual growth in new donor engagement; and
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders.

Fluency in English and Chinese will be an advantage, along with professional experience in Hong Kong and Greater China.

CIS invites applications from both established advancement professionals as well as non-traditional applicants with highly relevant transferrable skills.
