ORCID is an international mission-driven virtual organization registered in the United States. Founded as a genuine coming together of the community, to solve the challenge of disambiguating researchers in scholarly communications via unique identifiers, ORCIDs is now recognized as a critical piece of research infrastructure, reaching over 8m registered iDs and over 1,200 members in 2020.

ORCID is now seeking a new Executive Director to lead the continuing development and success of the organization. The role requires a visionary strategy leader and manager who will provide thought leadership in building the research information infrastructure of the future whilst developing, leading and managing a sustainable organization. They will ensure that the organization is well managed, delivering a high-quality and high-value service to its members and to the research and scholarly community. Working with the Board, the Executive Director develops ORCID’s strategy and is charged with responsibility for implementation of that strategy through leading, managing and developing the team responsible for business and activities of the organization.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable strategic leadership skills and proven experience in the development and implementation of strategy in a relevant context. S/he will bring a breadth and depth of understanding of the global research ecosystem and the role that ORCID does, and could, play. The successful candidate will evidence a commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and a vision and plans to advocate for and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the organization and field of work.

An executive search exercise is being undertaken by Perrett Laver in parallel with the public advertisement of the post. Perrett Laver will support the Search and Appointment Committee in the discharge of its duties, both to assist in the assessment of candidates against the requirements for the role and to identify the widest possible field of qualified candidates.

All applications will be reviewed by the Search and Appointment Committee in late July. Selected candidates will be invited to meet with Perrett Laver for first-round interviews in late July / early August.  Shortlisted candidates will be expected to prepare and present their vision to the Appointment Committee in mid-August, with a final group of candidates meeting with the Senior team and the Board at the end of August.
