The University of Kent is a leading UK institution with an excellent reputation for outstanding teaching, strong research and international links. We aim to be a community that empowers students from a wide range of backgrounds to find and shape their place in the world, and where academics are free to explore and deepen our understanding of it. We want students and staff to feel part of a common identity that celebrates and enhances their work.

We have set out a vision and strategy that builds upon strong foundations in education, student experience and research. We are determined to build on this to meet local, national and international needs. As part of this, the new Kent and Medway Medical School, a joint initiative with Canterbury Christ Church University, will bring vital skills to the region when it welcomes its first students in September 2020, while our Institute for Cultural and Creative Industries will support the fastest growing sector of the UK economy.

Our 20,000 students are diverse, passionate and independent. Our inspirational teachers have a Gold rating from the UK Government, the highest available, supported by Times Higher Award-winning staff that make sure everyone can achieve their potential. We are home to some of the world’s most influential thinkers. Canterbury, our historic base, has been a hub of learning for centuries, while we are also at the heart of Medway’s bid for City of Culture 2025. We are proudly international in outlook, with a distinct European identity led by our centres in Brussels and Paris, and partnerships with 400 universities worldwide.

As part of our ongoing change programme to raise our profile and delivery an ambitious Kent 2025 strategy, we are now seeking a Director of Engagement to provide inspirational leadership and strategic direction to enhance the University’s reputation regionally, nationally and internationally. Reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor, the Director of Engagement will act as the University’s key expert on communications – both internal and external – covering public relations, partnerships, business engagement and alumni engagement. As a newly created post, responsible for leading a directorate, the Director of Engagement will be responsible for developing a clear, coherent and compelling narrative around the University, and delivering on reputation enhancing activities.

The successful candidate will have proven expertise in communications, marketing, public relations or similar and a successful track record in developing, implementing and executing organisation wide strategies. You will have demonstrable experience in building effective networks and partnerships across organisational boundaries, and clear evidence of successful leadership through change.
