The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is a global resource for plant and fungal knowledge and the world’s leading botanic garden. We have two sites, one at Kew Gardens near Richmond in London and one at Wakehurst in Sussex, and 1000 employees and 500 volunteers. Kew Gardens is a major visitor attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  We have an extensive international network of individual partners and consortia and our scientific activities span 110 countries worldwide.

Science has always been at the heart of RBG Kew's purpose. Our collections, our people and our partnerships enable us to make an invaluable and highly relevant contribution to some of the biggest issues facing the global population. Our Science Strategy 2015-2020 provides focus and clarity on RBG Kew’s scientific priorities, while a major re-organisation of our scientific resources has ensured a strong foundation from which to deliver our three strategic priorities. A Commercial Phytochemistry Unit (CPU) has been established to further support and extend RBG Kew’s scientific mission, through commercially-funded scientific work and commercialisation, where appropriate, of RBG Kew’s scientific expertise and IP. Commercial revenue generated by the CPU will contribute to the long-term financial sustainability of RBG Kew’s core scientific activities.  The Science Strategy for 2021-2030 is currently in development.

RBG Kew is now seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist to support the development and growth of the CPU. Reporting to the CPU Director, and liaising with the Director of Science and Head of the Office of the Science Directorate, the Senior Scientist will be expected to take an active role in the delivery and oversight of RBG Kew’s existing commercial science activities, whilst identifying new commercial opportunities. The appointee will be expected to establish strong links and excellent working relationships with key internal stakeholders – particularly within the Science Directorate and the Directorate of Marketing & Commercial Enterprise – to support the development of effective commercial partnerships. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join RBG Kew and contribute to the development and success of the CPU.

We are looking for a candidate with an outstanding record of scientific achievement in natural product chemistry or a related discipline, with proven experience operating in, or interfacing with, commercial science or industry. S/he will demonstrate broad understanding of commercial science, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a track record of success in establishing and delivering commercial scientific partnerships. Leadership and management experience, including building and mentoring teams, and financial and business planning, is an advantage though not essential. The postholder will be based at Kew Gardens in London. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with the seniority of the role.

The deadline for applications is 9am BST on Friday 4th September.
