The Department of Computer Science and Exeter College are seeking applications for the DeepMind Professorship of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This post is made possible by a philanthropic donation from DeepMind and represents the latest step in a continuing expansion of AI research at the University of Oxford. Founded in London in 2010, DeepMind is one of the world’s leading AI technology companies and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.

The University of Oxford’s Department of Computer Science is a recognised global centre for AI research, with existing strengths across the whole spectrum of AI, from classic symbolic approaches, knowledge representation, search, and constraints, through human-centred AI, to deep learning, reinforcement learning, game theoretic approaches, and the theoretical foundations of ML. In addition to joining a vibrant computer science department, the DeepMind Professor will benefit from the breadth of AI research activity across the University, including AI groups in the Department of Engineering Science, the Department of Statistics, the Big Data Institute, and the new Ethics in AI Institute.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding, internationally recognised researcher in contemporary AI, with a proven record of achievement in any relevant area of AI research. They will establish and lead a research team in their area of expertise and will also play a leading role in building capacity and further developing AI research across the university.
