This is an opportunity to lead the technology initiatives of one of Hong Kong’s most prestigious and well-established international schools, the Hong Kong International School (HKIS).

Founded in 1966, HKIS is one of Hong Kong’s oldest international schools, and it continues to set the standard in Asia for an American college-preparatory K-12 education. HKIS is home to approximately 2,800 students from over 40 different nationalities and 500 faculty and staff across two campuses in Repulse Bay (Lower and Upper Primary) and Tai Tam (Middle and High School).

In its approach to technology, HKIS aims to be best-in-class. The School recently commissioned an audit of its Information Technology (IT) environment and is poised to make significant investments in technology and training that will benefit the school community both now and in the years to come.

About the Role

The Director of Technology will lead both short and long-range planning to support HKIS in creating and maintaining an Information Technology (IT) environment that is best-in-class, responsive to the school’s instructional needs and appropriate to its operational scale. To achieve this, the Director of Technology will work collaboratively with academic and administrative leaders across the School to identify application, content and computing platforms that support and allow for the seamless flow, processing and analysis of data; this includes the integration of technology in the ongoing instructional program. The Director of Technology will provide leadership in identifying appropriate hardware and software to ensure systems are interoperable and align with both educational (e.g., Student Information System, student learning data, admissions) and operational needs (e.g. Finance, Human Resources, Facilities Management). The Director will also be responsible for the development, implementation, operation, monitoring and evaluation of the School’s Information & Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure including hardware, software, and data storage systems; e.g., platforms, network equipment, telecommunications, and data security.

The Director of Technology reports to the Associate Head of School and is supported by a team of direct reports that includes the School’s IT Manager (who oversees a growing team of 15 people) and five Educational Technology Coaches (who support the integration of technology into classroom instruction).

Selection Criteria

HKIS is seeking to identify senior professionals who will bring to the role a balance of technical expertise and leadership skills and experience. Individuals with strong problem-solving skills and change management experience are encouraged to apply, and experience within the K-12 education sector is preferred but not required.

Specific qualifications sought include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field; advanced degree preferred
  • 10 or more years in a senior role overseeing ICT systems of a medium to large organization, including responsibility for developing, implementing, securing, and evaluating ICT systems
  • Experience leading a team of over 15 colleagues with accountability for annual goals and objectives
  • Experience with educational technology for faculty and students preferred
  • The ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including students, parents, teaching and administrative staff, and the members of the IT team.
