The opportunity

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is looking to recruit a Chair of the Board of Trustees. The new Chair will have to help the RSC navigate a post-Covid world that brings with it big challenges but also great opportunities to build on its outstanding reputation for creativity, entertainment, diversity and outreach.

Who are we?

The RSC creates world-class theatre made in Stratford-upon-Avon and shared around the world, performing plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries, as well as by today’s writers. We bring our work to the widest possible audience through live theatre, broadcast and online.

Our transformative learning and community engagement programmes reach over half a million young people and adults each year, and we are also a leader in creative immersive technologies and digital development. Our purpose is to ensure that Shakespeare is for everyone, and we do that by unlocking the power of his plays and of live performance, across the UK and across the world.

Our theatres have been closed since March, we have had to dig deeply into our financial reserves, and we have just completed a thoughtful and well-executed consultation process. The crisis in the performing arts, the effect of Covid in the towns and cities of the UK, together with the global shockwave of #BlackLivesMatter mean we must shape a new, ambitious and confident narrative for the future, effective for the local, national and international communities we serve.

Who are we looking for?

The successful candidate is likely to have demonstrable experience of leading an organisation through a significant strategic transformation, and to welcome the opportunity to do that at the RSC. We are looking for a highly experienced, inclusive and thoughtful leader who is innovative, forward-thinking, and has an evident commitment to the vision, mission and values of the RSC, with a deep appreciation for the power of theatre, education and culture to enrich society. Someone who is deeply committed to diversity, equality and inclusion, and able to amplify the voices of people currently underrepresented in our workforce, our audiences or our thinking.

In terms of time, we would expect a successful candidate to be able to make a sustained and substantial commitment to the RSC. This is a voluntary position, but reasonable out-of-pocket expenses are paid, and the RSC is open to applications from candidates who would require compensation for the cost of providing their time.

To apply

The deadline for application is 9:00am (GMT) on Monday 1st March 2021.
