The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) finds and destroys landmines and unexploded bombs in places affected by conflict. Since 1989, MAG has worked alongside over 19 million people in 68 countries, supporting them in rebuilding their lives and livelihoods after war. We also campaign for a landmine-free world, work to remove small arms from affected communities and, through training and education delivered in partnership with local communities, raise the risk awareness of those forced to live with the deadly contamination of conflict. We employ some 5,000 committed and highly skilled people in 27 countries and are regarded as a global leader in humanitarian practice and policy.

Our mission is to save lives and build futures by working with others to reclaim land contaminated with the debris of conflict, by reducing risk and by supporting improved management of weapons and ammunition, to create secure conditions for development.

We are currently seeking a new Chair and up to three Trustees to join our passionate, dynamic and collaborative Board, supporting the good governance of the charity and contributing to our lifesaving mission. As a Trustee, you will contribute to the shaping of MAG’s future direction, by helping to shape the organisational strategy and monitor progress, and by ensuring that the charity pursues its mission and objectives while sustaining its stability.

The Chair provides leadership and direction to the Trustees to enable the Board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation, as well as oversight and scrutiny of MAG’s operations. You will also support, and, where appropriate, constructively challenge the Chief Executive and ensure that the Board functions as a unit and works closely with the entire Leadership Team to achieve agreed objectives. You will act as an ambassador and the public face of the organisation, in partnership with the Chief Executive.

We are seeking an experienced and accomplished Chair, experienced in the external representation required of the role and with a deep understanding of the complex geopolitical landscape in which MAG operates. This is a significant opportunity for a person who has the strategic focus, governance understanding, leadership experience, passion, and time.

For the Trustee appointments, we would like to hear from candidates who come from a variety of professional backgrounds, but particularly welcome expertise in any of the following: law, international affairs and diplomacy, policy and influencing, conflict and peacebuilding, de-mining, strategic leadership, charity governance, risk, compliance and equality, diversity and inclusion.

MAG’s Chair and Trustee recruitment is driven by our commitment to finding individuals with the required skill set and creating a more representative and diverse organisation at all levels, with our Board leading by example. Our approach to recruitment is consistent with our commitment to the diversity charter established by the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations.

MAG is therefore striving to balance gender, age, disability, geography, and experience, alongside very critical and specific skills expectations. In this context, we are particularly interested to hear from those currently under-represented on our board: individuals who represent the local and ethnic diversity of Manchester where MAG is based and individuals with lived experience of MAG’s work and its global presence.

To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter, detailing how you fulfil the role description and personal specification and quote reference 5060 for Chair and 5062 for Trustees. The closing date for applications is 9am BST on Monday 10th May 2021.

The positions of Chair and Trustee are voluntary but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The Trustee Board meets at least four times a year in Manchester (or virtually), with minimum quarterly meetings of three Board committees, and holds a biannual Board Away Day. Trustees are normally appointed for a maximum of two terms of three years.

Based in central Manchester, MAG is registered in England and Wales as a charity and company limited by guarantee.
