The Alan Turing Institute
The Alan Turing Institute is the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence whose mission is to make great leaps in data science and artificial intelligence research in order to change the world for the better.
The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing is considered to have laid the foundations for modern-day data science and artificial intelligence. The Institute’s goals are to undertake world-class research, apply its research to real-world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of scientists, and shape the public conversation around data and algorithms.
After launching in 2015 with government funding from EPSRC and five founding universities, the Institute has grown an extensive network of university partners from across the UK and launched a number of major partnerships with industry, the public and third sector.
It is an exciting time to join The Alan Turing Institute, home to more than 500 researchers across data science and AI who are working with industry, government and the third sector to develop key technologies that have widespread societal impact. As the government plans to create its first national AI strategy, the Turing is set to play an important part in its development and implementation, and continue to contribute to the national COVID-19 recovery.
The Chief Scientist is a new role, reporting directly to the Institute Director and playing a key role on the Institute’s Executive Team. They will lead the creation and implementation of a Scientific and Innovation Strategy, drawing together the Institute’s expertise in data science and artificial intelligence for real world impact and societal benefit and nurturing new research collaborations. The new Chief Scientist will act as an ambassador of the Institute, representing its research nationally and internationally and ensuring that the Turing is recognised as the UK’s national centre for data science and AI, and working in close collaboration with strategic partners, funders and stakeholders.
Who we are looking for
We are seeking individuals with a genuine commitment to supporting the development of data science and AI in the UK, who bring experience of providing leadership and working collaboratively across a breadth of stakeholders. The new Chief Scientist will be comfortable representing the Turing’s research and impact to the media, policy-makers, funders and partners, and will likely have a demonstrable entrepreneurial flair. They will have a strong understanding of current academic and commercial research in data science and AI with an established and highly credible profile within the scientific community.
