The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies. We enable vulnerable people in the UK and around the world to prepare for and withstand emergencies in their own communities. And when the crisis is over, we help them to recover and move on with their lives.

This is an exciting and challenging time for the British Red Cross as we build on our 150 year history and begin to live our Strategy 2030, rise to the challenges of the coronavirus crisis and build to the future where we can make an even bigger difference for people in crisis.

Our current Chair, David Bernstein, is stepping down after a period of strong leadership and we are looking for an outstanding individual to succeed him.

The role

The role of Chair of the Board of Trustees is vitally important in the strategic leadership and governance of the British Red Cross. As Chair, you will ensure that the Board of Trustees provides long term, strategic oversight and governance of the British Red Cross to help it achieve the goals of our ambitious new Strategy 2030; ensuring the Board is effective, cohesive and representative. You will work closely with other members of the Board, the Chief Executive, the Executive Leadership Team and British Red Cross volunteers and staff to achieve our goals and ensure effective working relationships across a wide group of stakeholders. An excellent ambassador and visible champion for the British Red Cross, you will interact with a wide range of key stakeholders globally, including across the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

What we’re looking for

You will bring passion, energy, commitment and vision to help reach out and make an impact on the lives of people vulnerable to crisis. You will have had a successful senior leadership experience , leading the strategic development of large complex organisations, together with a keen understanding of good governance. You will have a track record of prior non-executive experience, ideally as Chair, and you will demonstrate excellent chairing skills, combining good judgement with excellent strategic and diplomatic skills as well as the capacity to think creatively and offer fresh perspective. An international perspective would be desirable but is not essential.  In addition, you will have strong communication, representational and influencing skills. You will be a strong advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion.

This position is non-remunerated (although we do repay reasonable expenses) and the initial term is four years. This can be extended for a further four years.

To apply please download further information on the required qualifications, skills and experience for this exciting role. The deadline for applications is 5pm GMT Monday 21st June 2021.

The British Red Cross values diversity and seeks to ensure it has the skills, experience and to support and reflect the broad range of activities and services of British Red Cross. The board is committed to ensuring it is representative of the communities it serves, and is keen to receive applications from sections of community who are under-represented in our governance bodies, such as black and minority ethnic (BAME) and people with disabilities.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrable commitment to inclusive practice and championing diversity, and have experience and understanding of diversity, especially in the UK context.
