Queen Mary University of London

Appointment of Chief Operations Officer

Queen Mary is a world-leading university at the forefront of research and innovation, providing world-class education across the disciplinary spectrum. We have a highly diverse student body for a Russell Group university, with more than 90 per cent of our students from a state school background; 75 per cent from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups; and 51 per cent being first from their family to go into Higher Education. We truly provide world-class education and opportunities to all students who have the potential, irrespective of their background.

It is this diversity in our student profile, alongside our research excellence and our deep engagement with our local communities, that makes Queen Mary unique and such a special place to work and study. Our community numbers over 28,000 students and 4,400 staff across sites in central London as well as in China, Malta and Paris. In our recently launched 2030 strategy we have articulated our ambition to be the most inclusive university of its kind, anywhere.

We are seeking to appoint a new Chief Operations Officer (COO) who will play an instrumental role in delivering our ambitions. A member of the Senior Executive Team (SET), and reporting to the President and Principal, the COO is one of three senior members of the professional services leadership, in a newly established structure that will oversee a transformation to optimise our infrastructure and service, and transform our ways of working. With oversight of Estates, Facilities and Capital Development, IT, HR, Research Services and Business Development and the professional services of our three Faculties, the COO will have an excellent opportunity for impact, providing outstanding leadership to these teams, and driving the development of the virtual, physical and cultural working environments across our campuses. Queen Mary has a turnover of more than £500 million, of which £112 million is research income.

You will be an inspiring and energetic individual with a track record of successful strategic leadership, operational management and service transformation across a large and complex organisation. You will demonstrate the capacity to translate your professional experience effectively into our world-leading academic environment and work with colleagues to deliver a cohesive and agile service. We are seeking a highly motivated professional who shares a deep commitment to our values and will be a positive catalyst for change.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Sunday 20th June 2021. For an informal conversation about the role, please contact Thomas Eade on 0203 928 7349 or Thomas.Eade@perrettlaver.com.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.

Applicants must have work authorisation for the UK.
