The Rust Foundation: Empowering people to joyfully do their best work.

The Rust project is a complex open-source effort that includes a programming language, a compiler, a package manager, and more. Rust is a community-driven project launched by Mozilla Research in 2010. Since then, more than 6,000 people have contributed to the Rust project, and many more have begun using Rust to deliver fast, low-resource, cross-platform products and solutions. The project has grown in size, adoption, and maturity, and in 2020 it became clear that there was a need for an independent legal entity to help the project continue to grow and prosper. The Rust Foundation was established as the independent non-profit organization responsible for stewarding the Rust programming language and ecosystem, with a unique focus on supporting the set of maintainers that govern and develop the project. It is sponsored by a number of corporations that use Rust and its mission is empowering Rust developers to joyfully do their best work.

The Rust Foundation is seeking an Executive Director (ED). The ED is the strategic and operational lead of the Foundation and will be responsible for setting the strategic goals for the Foundation. As the Foundation is just getting started, we are looking for an ED who will bring a strong sense of vision to the Foundation. Fundamentally, Rust Foundation programs will support the volunteer work of Rust maintainers. As the ED, you will work with the board to define the long-term strategy for the Foundation and implement this strategy. The ED also works to build and manage relationships with sponsors and is responsible for the foundation's finances. The ED is expected to have strong communication with the Rust project leadership, and in particular the Rust core team.

The successful ED will possess relevant strategic, operational, personnel management, and financial management experience. They will have experience communicating effectively and building relationships with complex stakeholder maps, and ideally with volunteer contribution models. This person will be a leader who can develop clarity in ambiguous situations and who can experiment and explore the best ways for the organization to fulfill its mission. They will be an excellent listener and explainer with strong social, diplomatic and interpersonal skills, and ability to build trusted relationships with others. Above all, the ED will be excited about the Foundation’s mission and bring passion and vision to the job.

To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter, detailing how you fulfil the role description and personal specification to https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/ quoting reference 5188. The deadline for applications is Sunday, July 18.
