Queen Mary University of London

Appointment of the Director of Finance

Queen Mary is a world-leading university at the forefront of research and innovation, providing world-class education across the disciplinary spectrum. We are a leading research-intensive university, ranked 5th in the UK for the quality of research outputs in the most recent assessment (REF 2014).  We have a highly diverse student body for a Russell Group university, with more than 90 per cent of our undergraduate London students from a state school background; 69 per cent from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic groups; and 51 per cent being first from their family to go into Higher Education. We truly provide world-class education and opportunities to all students who have the potential, irrespective of their background.

It is this diversity in our student profile, alongside our research excellence and our deep engagement with our local communities, that makes Queen Mary unique and such a special place to work and study. Our community numbers over 28,000 students and 4,400 staff across sites in central London as well as in China, Malta and Paris. In our 2030 Strategy we have articulated our ambition to be the most inclusive university of its kind, anywhere.

We are now seeking to appoint a new Director of Finance to provide exceptional leadership for the Finance department and who will play a critical role in steering and transforming the finance team to ensure the core business supports the mission of Queen Mary. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and a key member of the Professional Services Leadership Team (PSLT), the postholder will work closely with the CFO and others to support and influence the implementation of the QMUL Strategy 2030, ensuring that financial resources are most effectively allocated.  QMUL will be undertaking a transformation of its professional services, and the postholder will have a key role in ensuring a modern, efficient and scalable, customer focused financial service.  Alongside transformation of the transactional services there will be a focus on the provision of high-quality financial planning, modelling and analytical capability and advice to support institutional decision making.  In addition to the central finance team, the postholder will provide functional leadership across the University, including robust and efficient finance support in Schools, Institutes, Faculties, and other Directorates.

You will be an inspiring, energetic, and supportive individual with experience of financial management, service transformation, and cultural change within a large and complex organisation. You will demonstrate the capacity to effectively translate your professional experience into our world-leading, academic environment and to work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver a cohesive and agile service. We are seeking a highly motivated professional who shares a deep commitment to our values and will be a positive catalyst for change. A professional accountancy qualification is essential.

As Queen Mary is committed to diversity in all its forms, we wholeheartedly welcome candidates from minority or underrepresented groups to apply.

Location: London.

Salary: Competitive.
