As a Social Enterprise City, the UK’s first European Green Capital, Bristol was recently voted one of the UK’s five Centres of Cultural Excellence. Bristol’s international student population has grown by 63 per cent in recent years and it’s created several new strategic global partnerships, including the Max Planck-Bristol Centre for Minimal Biology, with the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (MPG) in Germany, thePerivoli Africa Research Centre and a major bilateral partnership with the University of Cape Town. The University is also developing a landmark new seven-acre campus, the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus. This  will enhance its presence in the heart of the city, underpin the development of an internationally significant Innovation District, and enrich its civic partnerships. With a highly professional infrastructure to support global engagement activity, there are significant opportunities ahead.

The University is seeking to appoint a new Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement (PVC-GE). This position will be a senior academic leader in the University and a member of the University’s Executive Board, working to shape Bristol’s external and international engagement initiatives in support of the University’s strategic priorities.  

The PVC-GE will be a visible senior advocate for external engagement activities across the University, responsible for enhancing an already high-performing portfolio. They will collaborate with Schools and Faculties to develop global partnerships that will further enhance Bristol’s research excellence and enrich the student experience. They will also deliver strategic oversight of student recruitment, admissions, marketing, communications, alumni relations and development.

Crucially, they will provide strategic management to the University’s global civic mission – one of three overriding pillars in Bristol’s new institutional strategy. This will see the University embark on new civic partnerships, drive positive societal change, deliver public benefit, and harness creative approaches that address global issues in a local context.

The new PVC-GE will have an established national and international reputation for global engagement initiatives and will have had significant university leadership and management experience within a comparable institution. The focus and aspiration for this role is truly global and the University welcomes diverse candidates with academic credibility and relevant experience from all geographies of the world.
